Though technically the highest point within the Netherlands is 321m as the true peak is just across the border into Belgium. Although it may not compete with the towering peaks found in other regions of Europe, Vaalserberg holds a special distinction for being the pinnacle of the Netherlands' gently rolling terrain. Spring and early autumn provide the best weather for visiting this iconic landmark, with mild temperatures and less crowded paths.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Vaalserberg is its proximity to the "Drielandenpunt" or Three-Country Point. This is where the Netherlands converges with Belgium and Germany, allowing visitors the unique opportunity to stand simultaneously in three countries. The area is marked with a specially designed monument and is a popular spot for photos and border-hopping fun.

At the summit, you'll find the Wilhelminatower, an observation tower that promises panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, although this wasn't open to the public when we visited. How to Reach the Highest Point in the Netherlands

Travelling by car is one of the most convenient ways to reach Vaalserberg. Ample parking is available near the hill, making it easy for visitors to park and begin their adventure. This was especially useful for us we drove to this iconic spot all the way from Luxembourg. From major Dutch cities like Amsterdam or Utrecht the drive typically takes around 2-3 hours.

For those reliant on public transportation, head to the nearby city of Maastricht. From there, local buses provide connections to Vaals, the closest town to Vaalserberg. Ensure to check the latest schedules and connections to plan your journey effectively. For a more nature-oriented visit, consider cycling the scenic route to Vaalserberg. Numerous well-marked bike paths traverse the picturesque Limburg countryside, and the journey provides a delightful mix of exertion and enjoyment.

It's the perfect spot for a memorable photo! If open, elevate your experience by climbing the adjacent  Wilhelmina Tower. Standing at 34 meters tall, the panoramic views from the top are truly breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the lush rolling hills and forests that stretch into Belgium & Germany.

Only 45 minutes away by car or a little over 3 hours by bike, you could tick off another iconic landmark and visit Signal de Botrange, Belgium's highest point. Standing at 694m above sea level, Signal de Botrange is a hiker's paradise, offering extensive trails that weave through the scenic landscapes of the High Fens. The nature reserve is rich with diverse flora and fauna, providing nature enthusiasts with ample opportunities for observation and photography. There's a café located conveniently at the peak, perfect for a rest following an exciting day of exploration.
